FAQs
What is Lifestyle Medicine?
As described by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), Lifestyle Medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Lifestyle Medicine certified professionals are trained to apply evidence-based whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat, and when used intensively, often reverse such conditions.
Many reputable national health agencies including the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, The Obesity Society, and the United States Preventative Services Task Force have all published guidelines recommending the implementation of lifestyle changes as the primary modality for the treatment of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Check out these websites as well as the ACLM website for more information.
How long are intensive lifestyle behavioral change sessions needed for effective long-term lifestyle change?
Effective lifestyle medicine is rooted in applying health & wellness practices based on supporting the six pillars of lifestyle intervention- whole-food plant-predominant eating patterns, increasing physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, decreasing risky substances, and enhancing social connections. Thoroughly addressing each of these pillars and working through how they each impact your individual health & wellness requires much time and effort from both the client and provider. This is an equally shared effort.
Intensive lifestyle behavioral change sessions are recommended for a duration of 12-18 months depending on the client’s specific needs. The recommended session schedule consists of one session weekly throughout the first month, bi-weekly sessions through months 2-6, then monthly sessions through months 7-12. At any time, clients may request more frequent sessions if they feel the need.
Do you offer all of the services that you would receive in a primary care clinic?
Our primary treatment modalities are based on utilizing lifestyle medicine to treat, manage, and reverse lifestyle-related chronic conditions primarily through intensive lifestyle behavioral change interventions. However, as a client of Living Well Huntsville City undergoing intensive lifestyle behavioral change sessions, if needed, services including off-site laboratory & diagnostic testing, and referral services may be offered on a case-by-case basis.
Also, don’t forget: As a unique healthcare service not readily available in traditional healthcare settings, we aim to work in collaboration with your other healthcare providers to maximize your overall state of well-being. Do you accept insurance?
We are in the process of connecting with insurance plans to cover payment for services as specified by your insurance carrier. We will notify our clients as soon as we have finalized this process. In the meantime, we are able to provide services under the direct pay for care model. Receipt for out-of-pocket services and documentation providing details of your sessions can be provided, if requested, so that you may discuss possible reimbursement options with your health insurance carrier.
Will you work in collaboration with a physician affiliated with LWHC?
